After retiring in 2014, I sold guitars at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments for two and a half years mostly because I love the guitar so much. Now that I'm retired I spend time playing my guitars, collecting fountain pens and creating RUclips videos!

A108 Torpedo Acrylic Fountain Pen Unboxing From Mystery Brand
The addition of that gold band in the middle of the barrel and the loss of a properly-crafted mother and chick(s), as well as the substitution of black for translucent layers are unnecessary detractions from the barely-changed design of the Souveran. The US rep for Pelikan told me the company did a poll to find out if customers cared if they got rid of the translucent layers, and they didn't. He said. They said. More's the pity. Could they have made the special anniversary limited edition (tmi!) pen in the same size at least, as the first Souverans? Apparently nobody thought of that. This is a hazard of selling a storied brand to philistines. I was able to buy a year-of-issue Pelikan model 200, no M. It has, alas, a crack, and I'm not sure what kind of adhesive would be safe for the material. So it sits in its case. Thanks for the fun and well-thought out review, especially as you seem to agree with me on all salient points. Thanks also to Stephen, and to Joost. No, I have no intention of buying this overwrought and overpackaged pen. Do the new Pelikan bosses think they are MB? One hopes not.
The Chinese DO have a year of the cat: The Year of the Tiger; last appearance in 2022. True, it ain't a house cat, but take that up with the Tyger!
Meh. I love my Pelikans, but this is just "how can we possibly add more bling to an already perfect design". In my eyes, none of the additions to this pen make any sense aesthetically.
Awesome pen.
I think so too!
I defintely should have a Pelikan M series someday. The writing feelings seems awesome.
Thank you, @corranhorn765!
This video was about a year B.I.M. ({Before Inkquiring Minds) viewing. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the FPR Himalaya V.2. It was horrible, so horrible, that after numerous replacement parts, I gave up. I kept the nib and feed, but the rest was fit for the trash . I have found Conklin and Monteverde pen to be very good. The nibs have improved, save for the Omniflex. I think they are still too stiff.
Conklin changed to Jowo shortly after I had this pen.
The gold band and the gold turning knob are a bit too gaudy. The finial is a bit of a disappointment as well. Mind you, I would not say no if someone threw one my way!
Pelikan has become probably my favorite brand of Fountain pen so far since I got into the hobby the last 4 or 5 years. Just classic looks. They just got it right way back and continue to keep it right. My only complaint is that sometimes you might get an over polished nib with babies bottom, and the fact that they discontinued the opaque barrel to see the ink. I still have quite a bit more pens to check out from brands I've never had in my hands yet, but It's going to take A LOT to knock Pelikan off the mountain. I even have a special Montblanc 146 and while I adore that pen and it's always inked, I feel like my Pelikans are a bit cheaper and more bang for your buck especially if you get them at a reduced price like I did and do. Great pen and great video as usual Doug!
Thank you, @williamcatalano1762! I keep waiting for a pen to dislodge my Pelikan M800 Blue Stripe from the top of the list. So far, nothing. Not even this one!
Clone or Crap? Crappy clone. Amazing, how well the Majohn/Moonman M800 clone of the Leonardo Momento still performs in comparison to much of the other Chinese stuff.
I pass the Admok M800 around at my latest pen meet-up. I big Pelikan fan who has many Pelikans said "That's very nice". I said "It isn't a Pelikan". He took it back and wrote with it again and examined it as was stunned.
@@InkquiringMinds I heard Canadians are very polite people. So maybe he was just very Canadian? I´ll gift me a Pelikan M805 this year, they are expensive here in Germany as well but not as excessively priced as in your country (import taxes, I guess).
The Lamy Safari may be intended as a "starter pen" but a lot of people may never move past it. It does everything most people buy a fountain pen for, putting ink on paper. I think the only reason to move past it is to step into the realm of nicer pens. I have a few nicer pens but my Safari remains my daily writer to this day. I would be disappointed if I lost it because it has sentimental value but I would not be out a Montblanc price level pen. I'll keep my Lamy and probably add another one soon.
They are very affordable and write great!
The VI is actually a 440 model with steel nib and no Touchdown.
The mid-barrel band is reeded, not knurled. I have quite a few Pelikans, including two M800s and an M1000. I think the 40th Anniversary pen is overdone; the barrel band destroys the symmetry, and the both the gold section and piston knob are unnecessary. I think it would have been better to change the the finial logo in some special distinctive way, and repeat the design on the filler knob. The packaging is grandiose; I don't save most packaging, as in my case they merely collects dust (though I have saved a couple of sturdy pen boxes to use in case I need to ship pens as gifts, for repair, or nib grinding).
Yeah I knew I misspoke and corrected myself.
Great to see you both on this video! Not sure who got the best trade.
Me!
I think that no ink window is a big miss. The band around the barrel is fine with me. The gold piston knob is meh, in my estimation and there should be 2 chicks for this anniversary edition as well as making the logo black (the green looks like some sort of tarnish). As for the nib, there could have been something more to it, like a two tone nib. Even with a discount I am sure it is still beyond my means. The packaging is superb.
It makes me really sad that Pelikan doesn’t manufacture translucent barrels anymore. It steers me away from a new one.
I agree.
This pen has really fallen in popularity, no one talks about it anymore. Why?
Because it is crappy and has been replaced by better models (630)
@@InkquiringMinds I didn't take that from your review. Why is it crappy? Because the piston operation is unintuitive. I can see that as a big knock which would turn many off but I wouldn't say that's poor quality. Is there a better quality hero 51 copy out there?
@@StarKnightZ My bad. The thumbnail was so small, that I thought it was another pen review. No, this WingSung 618 is a very nice pen. Again, I do believe WingSung has moved past this particular piston mechanism. It works okay, but getting it apart and back together requires patience.
Hi Doug, I think your Imperial VI may be an Imperial 440, the VI has a gold nib and the cap has a gold plated clip and a gold band at the bottom (very difficult to see in the black and white photo in your book). I think the sticker on the cap for the VI/440 is likely correct in that it most probably came from an Imperial ii, as the caps are very similar and it was probably a replacement for the original. I just picked up several Sheaffer's from a gentleman over the weekend and I've found the photo gallery of Sheaffer pens on the Payton street pens website quite helpful in identifying them, though they don't have capped and uncapped photos which is unfortunate.
Yeah. I pinned a note about it.
fyi - 456 in Niangao is available again!
I've got one! :)
@@InkquiringMinds now me too - hopefully others too before they vanish!!!

Hola, saludos desde Colombia. Sabes que hacer si el pistón de la pluma no se mueve al girarlo?
Is it full of old ink?
@@InkquiringMinds old ink
La pluma pertenecía a mi abuela y asumo que tiene 20 años sin uso
You need to soak it in water and then gently try to move the piston. If it doesn’t move, bbsoak some more. Gentle!
@@InkquiringMinds muchas gracias, lo voy a intentar y voy comentando lo que sucede
Do you have any guesses as to nib swapping to an M or specialised grind (say a Bobby nib)? Do you think it's friction fit or a screw-in housing? I've scoured FPN and Reddit and the various sales platforms, but no one seems to have reviewed this pen in as much detail as you! Thank you for your time!
The nib is friction fit inside the nib collar which unscrews for replacing with other Hongdian nibs in Hongdian nib collars. If you wish to swap in another #6 nib, you'll have to pull the Hongdian nib from the collar and use the Hongdian feed and collar with the new nib.
Nib briss!,,😂
🤣
Wow, 8000 micro mesh? I’ve never gone rougher than 12. Ballsy.
Gold vs steel nib... loved your 2 cents.. i think and i hope Mr Doug got a better pen in exchange 😅..
You and me both!
That Maiora NotteLuna is gorgeous. So much eye candy in one video, Doug. We were truly spoiled.
I love the Furore Grande with ebonite feed.
I have this pen and i sell it
I've been eyeing Kanwrite flexible nibs, but was frankly outraged that they charged $25 shipping only to send it COD. That just turned me off to this brand.
I enjoyed this video! That Dutch Pen Show 2024 Estie Sugar Rush pen - wow! Love it, but more than I am willing to spend on a single pen.
Wonderful!
I just bought an M2. Now I have seen this S5 video. Should I return the M2 and get the S5?
Keep both. They aren’t expensive!
Your opinion as a brilliant designer is always very appreciated! - Thank you! 😊 I will have a look at my modest collection and enjoy an already existing pen! 🖋
Wonderful! Thank you so much, @Blue_Pelikan!
In the worst case scenario could a Snorkel still function as a Touchdown 🤔?
I would think it should!
Thank you
5:35 KWZ inks smell good !
Quite the haul Doug. Looking forward to the resurrection videos.
More to come!
The Chinese pen looks super interesting
If I wasn't currently saving for the Atlas Sidewalk Sale I would be all over that Estie, it is a stunning colour.
Cool haul! I haven't had much luck lately myself but I get to live vicariously through you. By the way, for the Esterbrook - the nib is definitely not original but Venus bought out Esterbrook at some point in the late 50's or early 60's and for a while they made pens with the same type of nib unit, which is why it fits in the Esterbrook. Kinda junky nibs to be honest, Venus pens aren't the best.
Thanks, @FalloutVault, for the excellent information!
Great Video. Uguys work well together. I hope to see more video collaborations
We will!
I think I have that same Snorkel model, or at least same color and nib, lovely pen but I need to keep the ink bottle close when using it for long writing sessions, might be a very wet nib or might need some snorkel adjustments but still I hope you like yours.
Thanks for the info!
So, she said, “That!” I’ve never heard her say what Steven suggested. (I’m exhibiting a lot of restraint to keep this comment rated PG.) This was a very enjoyable video. Maybe you can do this format once a month virtually with other pen channel hosts like Doodle Bud, JG3, Figboot, PenBoyRoy, Drew Brown, Pens and Tea, and others.
I'm not that social! LOL
@@InkquiringMinds, aw come on! Your episodes on Appleboom were the best ones. At least do the Canadian ones.
Oh boy... Both have encyclopedic knowledge!! It's wonderful to see you together sharing. 🔥🤘🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice Haul, Doug. That Bev Dallas Parker 51 looks just like mine. If it is, the cap is sterling silver.
No. This one is a chrome cap.
OMG. That blackboard cut scene.....warning next time please 🫣
Doug, the nib on that Esterbrook is incorrect, as the originals had nib sections that came out easily and were easily replaced with any of the gazillion other models they made. Funny nibs, though: no tipping material on the tines, but a turned-under tine end where the rubber met the road, I mean, page. Maybe the last owner didn't like the engineering. Anyhow, replacement nib units are all over the place. The style numbers are not consistent, so don't expect the description to be accurate at all. Question: Where are you getting rubber or pli-glas sacs these days? My usual supply chain seems not to be working, and I understand the man has been sick. No news is no news, so I don't know.
Pentooling.com
@@InkquiringMinds Thanks
Excited to see the follow up videos on the 51s. The more I use my (or any pens for that matter) pens, the more I appreciate my 51s.
Right on!
It seems this model has vanished from the marketplace. So I ordered the 1860 Max. Which I guess is the replacement model or just a larger version of the 1841. I have been happy with Hong Dian of late. The quality of the pens is very good to excellent and the nibs have improved significantly. I am not a big fan of metal pens but perhaps I am slowly being won over. Great review, Doug.
Thanks, Paul!
Both of you together….Fire!! I was wondering when this would happen. It was great! Thank you.
Thank you, @j.e.madrigal!
What a nice haul. I'm Camp 'Leave the Inscription' because it preserves the history, but I can understand why someone might feel odd about it. But hey, it's pre-owned. I'm drooling over that lovely Parker pen/pencil set in pretty dove grey. Such an elegant model and color. P.S. I really love these Pen Resurrection videos where you give pens a new lease on life. How satisfying to see something considered trash become useful again.
It is very satisfiying (when it isn't a disaster)!
